Windmills Erected Near Sagamore Bridge

Anyone driving along the roads of Cape Cod may have seen the new addition to the skyline.  Very quickly over the last month two giant windmills have been erected near Route 6.  As of tonight both have been fully installed and it is expected that they will be up and running shortly.

These will be the first two windmills near the Sagamore Bridge but they likely won't be the last.  There is currently a proposal before the Town of Bourne to put a bunch of windmills near the new school.  Residents are fighting it because of the noise and other disturbances.  There is already a working one over by the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.  The newest windmills are being built on the Otis property.

Local Business A Bright Spot Through the Haze

There is very little good news surrounding the economy.  Things were terrible, they got a little better and are now getting worse again.  Every day there are headlines of major disruptions coming again and Massachusetts has been hit particularly hard.  Like any other area that saw a rapid increase in asset values we are now living through a rapid decrease in those same values which is making it tough for businesses to grow.

There are a few bright spots though particularly among the firms smart enough to diversify to a national stage.  PromoManagers is based in southeastern Massachusetts and is a provider of promotional wine sets and other similar products.  The company has partnered with Leeds to provide thousands of quality items to customers worldwide.   The company sponsors local sports teams for youths, cleanup of public properties and donates time and resources to other programs to the benefit of the community.  There are other much larger companies in the area that do nothing for the local community.  Take a trip to the soccer fields on a busy Saturday morning and you will quickly notice it's the smaller local companies that are sponsoring the kids, not the major national firms.

PromoManagers has been in business since 2003 and continues to grow and expand.  The trend in their industry has been towards franchising and so far they have no expressed any interest.  Bourne Bridge construction began again this week and traffic has become difficult.  The Main Street area of Bourne is still in tough shape and despite the project which was designed to revitalize the area being ongoing things are not looking much better.  With support there is hope that organizations like this one will be able to move downtown and turn it back into a nice area to visit.  To find more local businesses please check our earlier writing on local Bourne businesses.

Bourne Business and Economy

Bourne is located on both sides of the Cape Cod Canal and encompasses the villages of Buzzards Bay, Cataumet, Sagamore Beach, Pocasset and Sagamore.   The Town straddles the Cape Cod Canal and has recently approved the development of a massive affordable housing, senior housing and retail development near the site of the former Otis Air National Guard Base.

Bourne continues to enjoy vibrant growth in the business districts along Rte 3a anchored by a large boat dealer and dozens of regional and national businesses.  Bourne also has one of the largest marina infrastructures on Cape Cod and the Islands.   Accordingly Bourne is home to dozens of associated businesses from charter boat services and marine sales.  Bourne has a long history of marine involvement and is the site of one of the few remaining movable train bridges in the nation.  The canal that cuts through the Town took years to build and the subsequent bridges have yielded the name "Gateway to Cape Cod."

The population of the Town is quite diverse geographically and demographically.  The Town continues to grow while maintaining one of the lowest tax rates in the area.
